Toy Photography // Gollum

Gollum Takes 5 (it gets hot in Middle-Earth!)

I love presenting characters in unexpected ways and situations, especially if it humanizes them (whether or not they're actually human!) or makes them more relatable.

Toy Photographer Puts The Action In Action Figures

Bullseye's Bubble Bath

There is always a degree of chance when it comes to making one of these images with real liquid splashing...you can only control so much. If I'm not happy with the shot, the cleanup and re-setting up of the shot after each take requires a considerable amount of time and effort. So I was happy when I nailed this image on my first attempt. I love how the little alien and binocular characters on the ground seem to get it the worst - something I couldn't really control.

Los Angeles Toy Photographer // Toy Story Series

Toy Story - To Infinity and Beyond!!

I create amazing Toy Story imagery using real toys.  Images are created using practical effects. Flying objects, cracked eggs, smoke, fire, splashing liquids... all real, and all photographed real time in the scene.

California Toy Photographer // Lego Minifigures

LEGO Minifigure Photography

These three images are my first foray into LEGO photography.  The top image, titled Emergence, is featured in the gorgeous LEGO photography magazine, Bricks Culture.

LEGO Minifigures are just that... mini figures.  They measure roughly 1.50" tall and have minimal articulation. Given this, they still allow amazing stories to be told and photograph beautifully.

My toy photography is created using practical effects. Flying dirt and debris, smoke, fire, splashing liquids... all real, and all photographed real time in the scene.

Toy Photography // Ant-Man Series

Ant-Man Toy Photography

This is a series of fun Ant-Man images created over the past couple of months.  These are very small, fixed-pose figures.  The challenge with fixed-pose figures, regardless of size, is coming up with more than one or two stories with them.  I consider myself a storyteller first, and photographer second.  This definitely helps when working with these types of figures.

My toy photography is created using practical effects. Flying dirt and debris, smoke, fire, splashing liquids... all real, and all photographed real time in the scene.

Toy Photographer // Ant-Man Magnifying Glass

Ant-Man's deadliest foe...a 10-year old boy with a magnifying glass!

I didn't realize that a magnifying glass casts a huge shadow everywhere except where the magnified point of light is. Strange!  But I love the wisp of smoke the magnifying glass created as it burned the branch.

E.T. Phone Hooooome....

I love the nostalgia and emotion this image makes me feel.  That is what toy photography is for me... an opportunity to create images that convey emotion and feeling, and as a result hopefully makes the viewer feel these exact same things.  Thanks for the warm-fuzzy, E.T.!

Toy Photography // A Rare Los Angeles Day

Well, this was two days ago - when it was very cool, blustery and a little wet. It was a rare cloudy day here, so I grabbed my gear and some toys and ventured out for a few hours. And today? Back to cloudless 90 degree weather!

Toy Photography // New York City

New York City - the strongest, most amazing, resilient city in the world.  We had an opportunity to visit for 10 days last summer, and it quickly became one of my favorite cities in the world (and I've been to some amazing cities). Keeping this amazing city and its people in my mind this September 11.
