Golden Gate Park Children Portraits

Spent some time in San Francisco over the holidays - visiting with family and recharging the batteries. Once in a while I'll leave the pro gear at home and just bring along my point and shoot. Not only is it a lot easier to travel with but it forces me to look at things differently than I normally would. All of these photos were taken in Golden Gate Park, except for the last two photos which were taken at the Sutro Bath ruins along the coast. I don't think we saw the sun the entire time we were there thanks to the famous San Francisco fog. Great trip back to the City by the Bay!

Santa Barbara Wedding - Kat & Will

It was a breathtaking drive up the coast on Highway 1 to Santa Barbara. I had never seen a more perfect Southern California day for a wedding. The oppressive heat of just a day earlier had vanished, leaving us with a perfect fall day. When Rachel (my awesome second shooter and, ahem, beautiful wife) and I arrived at Kat's house she and her bridesmaids were in full 'getting ready' mode. You can tell a lot about how the day is going to go by how the 'getting ready' is going. In this case it was simply a fun gathering of close friends and family... I knew the rest of the day would follow suit.

Kat and Will's ceremony took place in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara, at the Trinity Episcopal Church on historic State Street. The church is amazing, like one you'd expect to find in the English countryside, except with palm trees and impossibly blue skies adding a Southern California flair!

The reception was held at the beautiful Santa Barbara Yacht Club, a stunning venue with the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Santa Barbara Harbor on the other. My Canon wasn't the only canon being shot there... the club had a deafening artillery canon they fired repeatedly over the Pacific in honor of Will and Kat's wedding. And if that wasn't enough to set this wedding apart from all others, a Harbor Patrol boat cruised right up to the beach and gave a water nozzle salute to Kat and Will. Awesome!

So again, not the official blog post from Kat and Will's Santa Barbara wedding... but going through their photos I came across this dreamy moment and had to post it up. This was taken at the beginning of the reception at the Santa Barbara Yacht Club... on the boardwalk with the Yacht Club in the back. The sun was beginning to set and this was the first quiet moment the newlyweds had to themselves. This photo really captures the feeling of love, emotion and romance felt throughout the day. Love it.

Los Angeles Wedding Photography - Getting Ready

One of my favorite parts of the wedding day is the getting ready stage with the bride and her bridesmaids. It's like being backstage before the big concert - with the bride being the star and her bridesmaids the crucial backup singers. The preparation can literally take hours, involving hairstyling, makeup and getting dressed. There's typically a mix of anxiety and excitement ranging from panic to all out party.

I'm always amazed at the differences between the guys and the girls before the wedding. The guys are often kicking back, joking around, watching sports smoking cigars and drinking their favorite spirits. They wait until the last possible minute to throw on their tuxedos - and it's then that someone notices they're missing their shoes or tie - and then the mad scramble. Guys will always be guys, lol. But somehow it always comes together.
There's always a story to be told on ones wedding day - and for me it starts well before the ceremony.

Family Portrait Photographer - What to Wear

A frequent question I get asked by my clients is, "what should my family wear for our portrait session?" It's a great question because while I want to capture the personality of the family I also hope that everyone's clothing works together, not against each other. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to one's wardrobe. But here are some general tips and advice that can help make your portraits more visually appealing and cohesive.

The goal of any group shot is to direct the viewer's attention to the subjects' faces. No one family member should stand out or distract from the other family members. To accomplish this, it's important to put some thought into coordinating outfits. This doesn’t mean everyone has to wear identical outfits (which would be cheesy). Rather, the idea is to make sure one family member doesn't show up wearing shorts and a tank top when everyone else wears khakis and long-sleeved button down shirts.

Coordinate outfits. Everybody in the portrait should wear items that compliment each other in style and color. It is not necessary for clothes to match, but they must make sense together. For example, if one person wears a suit and tie and another wears shorts and a t-shirt, the portrait may look unbalanced and poorly planned.
Stick to solids and subtle patterns when possible. Bold stripes, large designs, logos, and polka dots stand out and tend to draw attention from the portrait's subjects. An eclectic mix of patterns can clash and reduce the quality of a portrait.
Dress in timeless clothing for your family portrait. Let your age, not your clothes, date the portrait.
Wear appropriate shoes and socks. Many family portraits are full-body shots, so if Mom wears sneakers with her dress she'll probably feel silly. If anyone plans to change clothes, bring shoes and socks to go with each outfit.
Wear colors that translates well in photography. Color is critical when taking group shots. Avoid wearing very intense, bright colors. This means that cousin Beth shouldn't be wearing her favorite neon pink blouse and fluorescent green mini skirt. Instead, have family members wear clothing with neutral tones, such as blues and browns. Also, be careful not to mix light and dark tones together. Doing so creates visual confusion, as one subject appears to pop out of the photo while the other recedes. Dark colors like navy blue, black and earth tones look especially nice outdoors. White clothing can get lost against a white background. Bright shades of yellow, red, orange and pink can alter skintones and aren't ideal for photographs.
Clean and iron all clothing before the portrait. If your clothes wrinkle easily, change just before the sitting. Bring wrinkle release spray and a detergent pen to the portrait site for last-minute emergencies.

Again, use this as a guideline not a hard and fast rule. In the end, your family's personality, interaction and emotion will ultimately make the portrait. The following photos are great examples of this.

Westlake Village Inn Wedding: Ashli & Justin

Just a few days earlier it was 110 degrees in Southern California so when I awoke to a beautiful, cooler September day I knew it was going to be an amazing wedding. The formula is actually pretty simple: Beautiful Day + Stunning Venue + Impossibly Gorgeous Couple = Perfect Wedding! And to put an exclamation point on it all I was shooting with my good friend and fellow photographer, William Innes.

This was my first time shooting at the Westlake Village Inn. This venue exudes character and charm... a wedding photographer's dream. One can literally find eye candy locations around every corner when walking the grounds of the Westlake Village Inn.

Ashli & Justin were such a fun couple to spend the day with. Thanks for letting us be a part of your day!

Terri's son, Kyle, is Angie's friend and classmate. Terri was an absolutely stunning bride. I've shot quite a few weddings - three this week alone - and I have to say Terri's gown and shoes are among my all time faves! I don't say this lightly as I've photographed some stunning (and stunningly expensive) shoes - Louboutins, Steve Maddens, Jimmy Choos, etc. Congratulations Terri and Mark... thanks for allowing me to be a part of your wedding day :)

Westmont College Art - Jenchi Wu

Jenchi was recently invited to install her ceramic sculptures on the beautiful grounds of Westmont College. The college is set in a breathtaking location in the hills high above Santa Barbara. Westmont College generously allowed Jenchi the freedom to decide what was to be shown and where... not an easy task given the size and beauty of the campus.

The opening reception for this installation is Sept. 2, 2011 from 4-6pm. Please stop by if you happen to be in the area. The installation goes through May 5, 2012.

Los Angeles MOCA Street Art

Some photos from a recent visit to MOCA's Art in the Streets exhibit. It was a great day, one that began with us having an amazing ramen lunch in neighboring Little Tokyo. Our little ramen dive is a must-stop for us anytime we're in the area. Once inside MOCA it was sensory overload as we walked through the cavernous display of street art. We've been to quite a few shows at MOCA and this by far appears to be their most successful in terms of attendance. The place was packed with people of all ages. Street art clearly appeals to a huge, varied group of people. Some of the installations were amazing re-creations of actual street scenes. Street art... literally! The third photo is a capture of Angie jumping at the entrance to a small, makeshift theater.

Nothing like a day of art to inspire and motivate!

Jumping The Broom

"Jumping the broom," as demonstrated here, is a popular and growing custom in African American weddings and represents the joining of two families. Jumping the broom can be performed at the reception, just after the bridal party enters the reception area, but is most commonly performed during the ceremony after the minister pronounces the couple man and wife. As you can see by this photo of Tory and Christina, jumping the broom can be a jubilant moment performed with flair... the perfect way to begin the recessional back down the aisle.

Terranea Resort + Trump National Wedding

In the midst of a Southern California heat wave - where temps reached 100+ in Valencia - I was wondering how hot it would be at yesterday's wedding in Rancho Palos Verdes. So you can imagine how excited I was as I drove towards the ocean and saw a bank of fog off the coast. This ensured perfect wedding weather (for me at least). Gorgeous day.

I photographed Tory and Christina's wedding with Atlanta photographer, Erik Umphery. Erik and Tory are good friends, having attended college together in Atlanta back in the day. We started off at the beautiful Terranea Resort... a stunning property perched atop a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. I hung out with Tory and his ten groomsmen most of the day, which I liken to a party at the beach! This group of guys are so close, and so much fun, the afternoon literally flew by in a blur.

We eventually made our way to the stunning Trump National Resort where the ceremony and reception was held. Here are just a few teaser photos that captured the flavor of the day for me.

Fort Tejon Student Living History Program

This was a trip that we will never forget - definitely a highlight of the school year. No electricity, no running water, no Game Boys, dinner by candlelight... this was as close to an accurate depiction of life in 1856 as one is likely to find. Thank you to Mrs. Ehrlich and the other 4th grade teachers for organizing this amazing experience for our kids, aka Recruits. Los Angeles Mother's Day Portraits

We took these portraits at one of my favorite locations in Santa Clarita. As soon as we got there Angie noticed that the small creek running through the park had a bazillion pollywogs in it. After a quick session we had to run home, grab some small nets, make a picnic lunch and head back to the park. Spent the rest of the day catching (and releasing) pollywogs. Perfect Mother's Day!

Recently traveled to San Francisco to celebrate my Mom and Dad's 80th birthdays. Before the big party we went to a nearby park for a quick portrait session. You have to work fast with Dad because in 5 minutes he's pretty much done, lol. Towards the end of the session I found a tree that just begged to have it's photo taken with Grandma and Angie so we happily obliged it. :) Happy birthday, Mom and Dad!

Kay & Trey Wedding at the University Club

It was so amazing to be able to end the week on a high note... that note being Kay & Trey's beautiful wedding at the historic University Club in Pasadena. I LOVED shooting at this venue... so many opportunities to create beautiful images. Well, honestly, with a couple as beautiful as Kay & Trey I could have created stunning images in the parking lot of Albertsons!

The month of March had been one of the wettest on record. So the question of the day was, would it rain? Normally this is of little consequence to most people but this day was Kay and Trey's wedding. Kay planned an intimate courtyard ceremony so the question loomed large. Should she risk it or should she play it safe and move the ceremony indoors? You'll see what she decided as you look at the photos.

Los Angeles Children Photographer - Violin Practice

It's been a while since I posted a photo of Angie playing the violin. I love the mood and atmosphere captured in this photo. I remember when Angie first started playing the violin. Just like most beginning violin players her playing sounded like fingernails to chalkboard. But that was a few years ago. Now I look forward to her daily practice. Fingernails to chalkboard has evolved into decidedly beautiful music and I find myself humming her songs throughout the day.
