Nick + Nicole's Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Wedding

It was still dark when friend and fellow photog William Innes and I rolled up to the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach just after 6:00am. The morning air was crisp but you could tell that it was going to be a beautiful, warm day. Needless to say it was that and more... an amazing day. It was so cool getting to know Nick and Nicole, a couple of Southern California beach kids. I knew their wedding would be different and amazing when I learned that they'd be saying their vows on the beach among seagulls and swimsuits. Thanks, Nick and Nicole, for letting us be a part of your day.

The Audition

We ended the work week by taking Angie into Hollywood this afternoon for an audition. Hollywood, for those of you not familiar with the area, is a 30 minute hop, skip and a jump from where we live in Valencia. The audition took place in a really cool 50s ranch style home just off of Melrose Avenue. The waiting area was filled with actors young and old... pretty much all with stars in their eyes. Well, except for Angie. We're pretty nonchalant about all of this and don't pursue it like many others do. But Angie enjoys it so when an audition comes up that we think is a good fit for her we'll try and make it. I read somewhere that an actor on average books one out of one hundred auditions... so we usually go in to these things thinking it would be nice if she books it but not expecting it. The life of an actor.

I love this photo. Angie and a few other actors were "on deck" waiting for their turn. It was a dark hallway and you could see and feel the anxiety. This is a story being told through body language. I know it looks like Angie (in the middle with her head bowed) is deep in thought but more likely she was checking out her toe or a piece of lint on the ground. But I kind of like how it makes her look like an actor contemplating her role.

Hawk Eats Lizard - News at 11

I had a cool "Circle of Life" moment today while peering out my bedroom window. A young Cooper's Hawk dive bombed some shrubs and came up with a tasty but unfortunate little lizard. The hawk then flew to a eucalyptus branch just 15 yards from my window. A quick dash to get my camera and I was able to capture him tearing the poor little lizard limb from limb and devouring it. I don't usually go out of my way to photograph birds... well, I guess I still don't.

Bob Moskowitz - Bleicher/Golightly Gallery

Last night we went to painter Bob Moskowitz's opening art reception at the Bleicher/Golightly Gallery in Santa Monica. Bob, an amazing fine artist and art instructor at Ventura College, created an all new body of thought-provoking work for this show over the summer. The Bleicher/Golightly Gallery is a beautiful space that is brought to life by Bob's work.

The Creative Process

Yesterday was one of those perfect days that was filled with art - creating it, looking at it, talking about it, breathing it. Rachel got busy on the potter's wheel creating bowls for an upcoming solo gallery exhibition... traditionally thrown bowls which will be used in a very nontraditional way. Angie, in the meantime, put acrylic paint to canvas on a piece she's been working on for an upcoming competition. An amazing day of creating art was followed by an evening of appreciating art as we attended an art opening in Santa Monica. It's amazing how a day focused on art lets one see art everywhere they look. It's like walking out of a dark room into the light... your eyes adjust and you begin to see everything - details, textures, angles and compositions. Objects that are normally mundane and overlooked take on new meaning. It's like seeing things for the first time.
